Description: The Ed Rooker Encore Awards are recognitions sponsored and presented by the North Carolina Chapter of the American School Band Directors Association to outstanding band directors with less than seven years of experience in the profession.
Purpose: The purpose of the Ed Rooker Encore Awards is to honor the achievements and service of new band directors and to promote the ASBDA mission of fostering rising talent in the music education profession.
Criteria: Candidates for the ASBDA Ed Rooker Encore Award must:
- Not currently be a member of ASBDA
- Have at least two years of experience as a band director
- Have not completed their 7th year as a band director
- Distinguish themselves as a teacher of quality and potential
- Demonstrate professionalism in working with fellow directors
- Participate in band functions at the district and state levels
- Volunteer their time and service within their county or district
Application Process: Candidates for the ASBDA Ed Rooker Encore Award are nominated by application through a current ASBDA member. Applications must be submitted to the State Chair by the spring meeting at NCBA Honors Band. Candidates are voted upon by the chapter members present at the spring meeting. Any number up to six educators may receive the Ed Rooker Encore Award in a given year. Awards will be presented the following November at the NCMEA Convention during the NCBA General Business Meeting.

ASBDA created the Edwin Franko Goldman Award as a symbol of high esteem and respect and as a measure of appreciation and gratitude for outstanding personal contributions to the school band movement.
Recipients may or may not be a member of ASBDA, but shall be an active or retired director whose teaching career shall have included work in the schools and who has contributed substantially in the field.

The Captain James C. Harper Award can be presented by any ASBDA member to one high school senior who exhibits the highest in dedication to the concert band program.
